jhana is proud to announce a first round of venture capital funding of ~$1.6 million led by Girish Mathrubootham and Manav Garg ( Together ) This round seeds jhana’s legal AI assistants that help lawyers produce research and review documents faster and with fewer errors. https://jhana.ai/press/ We've kept our heads down for a long time now, and this means that among other things, we have been silent about the funding that we closed in December 2023. We prefer to spend time in silence, building some of the world's first law-native model architectures, designing nouveau interfaces for new technologies, and rigorously testing our AI outputs. Much of the last two years have been spent building quality judicial data pipelines and ensuring that our models are anchored to ground truth and expert opinion. This also makes jhana the only legal AI company in India, and one of few in the world, to quantitatively test and benchmark its technologies. In other words—we are here because we mean business, not to build lazy wrappers or to ride waves. I recently had the pleasure of sharing some thoughts about AI, the future of legal practice, and some of the things we are working on at https://jhana.ai over lunch and coffee at the Madras Bar Association— I’ve always found it quite illustrative to see the endearing curiosity that the doyens of the bar boast, where age is a number associated with your paperwork and the law is a pursuit beyond profession. We share their investment in justice systems, as well as a cautious optimism that we may influence the practice towards beneficence and alignment, for the sake of decades from today. Walking into the jhana office today, I found this. Because nothing says existential legal crisis like a placeholder for my coffee. I’m worried about what my lunchbox might say next. Jokes aside, this got me thinking. Stare decisis has always been about ensuring consistency while adapting to societal change. But AGI introduces a paradox. It doesn’t just adapt—it optimizes, correlates, and even suggests new frameworks. From a systems perspective, AGI processes case law with a scale and speed that humans can’t match. It detects correlations buried deep in data and proposes frameworks that no human judge—or legal system—may have considered before. Here’s the catch, optimization isn’t the same as understanding. The law is as much about principle as it is about pragmatism. Judges consider not just logic, but context, morality, and the impact of their decisions on human lives. The question then becomes can an AGI, trained on historical data, ever truly grasp the nuanced ethical considerations that underlie precedent? If stare decisis is dead, I hope it left a will. We at Thomson Reuters India successfully hosted the Legal Technology event in partnership with Indian LegalTech Network (ILTN) with about 120 registrations from all over India from people across institutions like Accenture , LinkedIn , Deloitte , Zepto , Wipro , IBM and many more. The event hosted startup presentations from jhana , CADRE ODR , Sarvam and ThinkSwitch AI and had insightful panel discussions with panelists across different facets of Legal Technology. I am glad I had the opportunity of hosting the event and moderating the Kickoff by David Wong and subsequent panel discussions from subject matter experts in this space ( Vaishali Gopal ; Kashyap Kompella, CFA ; Surya Prakash B S ; Kavitha Kadari ; Gunjan Kumar ).
