Shared 360 content, some of which is still used in the standardization. Collaborated with Samsung and Huawei to answer Call for Proposal (CfP) for the VVC video codec (successor to H.265/HEVC). 

Implemented, initiated and owned General Purpose RAW (GPR) image format feature across company. GPR is a new Raw Image format that is based on DNG, but enables much smaller files with visually transparent image quality. Worked with Adobe teams to enable GPR decoding on their ecosystem. Optimized encoder and decoder and eventually open-sourced GPR (see https://github.com/gopro/gpr)

Involved in all aspects of real time video codec implementation, including speed optimizations, video quality improvements and automated testing. Rewrote deblocking filter, sub-pixel motion estimation (ME) and CAVLC parsing to achieve 15% speed improvements. Reduced memory footprint of the encoder by 50%. Developed and owned codec regression and fuzz testing scripts.

Participated in scalable HEVC (SHVC) Call for Proposal with 2 other organizations. Investigated and developed several tools to improve coding efficiency of SHVC, including inter-layer loop filter, alternate block coding order and difference coding mode.

Vidyo provides both software-based technology and product-based visual communication solutions. The VidyoWorks platform and APIs leverage H.264 Scalable Video Coding and Vidyo's patented VidyoRouter to deliver scalable video conferencing, collaboration solutions and cloud-based services over public networks at a price comparable to audio conferencing. VidyoTechnology is used by Hitachi, Teliris, ShoreTel and other major organizations and enterprises.

TIGER encoder for high-quality AVC/MVC compression of HD video for Blu-ray disk (BD) format. Deployed at Technicolor’s digital authoring facility, the encoder was used for authoring several movie titles in BD format, including world’s first Blu-Ray-3D title. Developed encoder algorithms for speed and subjective quality.

A multi-threaded/real-time professional profile H.264 decoder for x86 and IBM’s CELL platform. The decoder splits decoding into various pipeline stages, with each pipeline doing small task and then passing macroblock list to the next stage. Implemented scheduling, profiled and optimized the decoder to achieve load balancing.
