Afeef Sheikh is a Nanoscale Design Researcher and Founder of The Literacy Crusade. He is a recipient of the Obama National Gold Service Award and a TEDx Speaker. Currently, Afeef is working as a Student Researcher in the Nanoscale Design and Manufacturing Laboratory at the Cockrell School of Engineering, The University of Texas at Austin. In this role, he is designing and testing microelectromechanical systems that act as metamaterials with programmable stiffness. He is also performing simulations and high-level analysis in Simulink/MATLAB to determine efficacy. The proposed system has real-time control over its elastic properties with applications in military and aerospace. Prior to his current role, Afeef worked as a STEAM Mentor and Tutor, providing mentoring and tutoring services to middle and high school students on subjects such as calculus, algebra, geometry, essay writing, poetry, and ACT prep. He is also an Author of an ongoing article series called "Randomly Organized Thoughts" that encourages conscious thought and introspection about simple or overlooked aspects of life. Afeef holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Cockrell School of Engineering, The University of Texas at Austin, which he is expected to complete in 2021. He also attended Nikola Tesla STEM High School in Redmond, WA, and Redmond High School in Redmond, WA. Afeef has a wealth of experience as a Research Scientist and is proficient in Python and test. He has 4.94 years of relevant experience and is passionate about using his skills and knowledge to make a positive impact on society.
