AJ Heller is a highly skilled Software Engineer with over 11 years of experience in the field. Currently working at Google, AJ is a gRPC core developer and the author of control software for data center power throttling. He is proficient in C, C++, and Python, and enjoys writing code that needs to be written well. Prior to his current role, AJ worked at LinkedIn as a Staff Software Engineer, where he was the project co-chair and development lead for LinkedIn's data center power management system. He built the system from the ground up for stability, with the goal of letting power telemetry data inform (and sometimes automate) the company's data center operations. Additionally, AJ was the one-time owner and lead developer of the data center network monitoring and alerting system, which he inherited, improved, and handed off to another team. He also authored a system that distills MySQL binary log events into audit trails for humans. AJ's experience extends beyond software engineering. He worked as a Data Engineer/Program Director at Insight Data Science, where he helped many talented engineers learn the Data Engineering trade. He ran three sessions of an intense project-based program, splitting his time between 1x1 mentoring, lecturing, and building industry relationships. AJ updated the course curriculum to introduce code craftsmanship and clean software design, continuous integration, and the challenge of dealing with data skew. For a time, he managed the company's AWS infrastructure and provided training to their Fellows (students) and staff. AJ's educational background includes a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Mathematics and Statistics from California State University and an Associate of Arts (A.A.) in Computer Science from Cerritos College. He also completed a Data Science Specialization program (via Coursera) at The Johns Hopkins University.
