11th IEEE International Conference on Power Electronics, Drives, and Energy Systems (PEDES) 2024 Inauguration highlights ⚡ The 11th IEEE International Conference #PEDES14 organized by the EEE Dept, NITK, was inaugurated today. Scheduled to be held from Dec 18 to 21, 2024, this flagship biennial conference is sponsored by the IEEE Industry Applications Society & technically co-sponsored by the IEEE Power Electronics Society & Power Energy Society. This year marks a significant milestone as it is the first time the IEEE PEDES conference has a Woman General Chair, Dr. Kalpana R from NITK. The conference has achieved several remarkable records this year: • The highest number of submissions with over 900 papers received. • Over 500 papers presented, the highest in its history. • Record-breaking industry sponsorships, registrations, & industry sessions. • Exceptional keynote lectures & tutorials without any repetitions. A notable highlight this year is the participation from Northeast India, which has been absent in previous conferences. This year, 76 papers from Northeast India were submitted, constituting 10% of the overall participation. NITK Hosts Transformative Advance Leadership Camp for 300 NCC Cadets The Advance Leadership Camp (ALC), a centrally organized camp conducted by 2 KAR ENGR COY NCC, was conducted at the National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal. This 12-day camp, from Dec 9 to Dec 20, 2024, has brought together 300 NCC cadets, including 100 girls, for a transformative experience focused on leadership development, confidence building, and personal growth. The 300 participating cadets participating are from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Goa and Kerala. The camp is organized on behalf of the Director General NCC (DG NCC), NCC Directorate Karnataka & Goa, and Group Headquarters (Gp HQ) Mangalore. The camp features a diverse array of events and activities designed to enhance personality development and instil leadership qualities among the cadets. The inauguration ceremony on 09 December featured an inspiring address by Col Viraj Kamath, Group Commander, NCC Gp HQ Mangalore, who emphasized the importance of leadership, discipline, and character in shaping the nation’s future. Camp Commandant, Col A Kaushik, in his address, urged the cadets to actively participate in the camp’s activities and to seize the opportunities to learn and grow into confident and responsible future leaders of our country. Cadets participated in activities such as Wall Climbing, Obstacle Course training, and special talk sessions on Leadership, Entrepreneurship, Personality Development, Public Speaking, and Teamwork, conducted by Camp Commandant, Col Anilesh Kaushik and various NITK faculty members. Additionally, various cultural and sports competitions were held to foster camaraderie, team work and showcase talent. As part of the camp, cadets also visited NITK’s state-of-the-art facilities, including the Biogas Plant (500 Kg Bio-Waste Recycling Pilot Plan) and NITK SEARCH. The Biogas Plant efficiently processes up to 500 kg of food waste daily, generating renewable energy and organic fertilizer, thus addressing waste disposal challenges on the NITK campus. NITK SEARCH, anchored by its portable Control and Command Centre, is a high-tech emergency response hub for Dakshina Kannada's coastal areas. A special session was also conducted by the Exchange Participants Association (EXPA), comprising ex-cadets from across the country, who shared their knowledge and experiences with the current cadets. The NCC camp embodied the corps' values, with cadets enthusiastically participating and transforming into future leaders, poised to make a meaningful impact on society and the nation. 12 NITK Students Selected for Bharti Airtel Scholarship We are proud to announce that 12 of our students have been selected for the prestigious Bharti Airtel Scholarship Program. This esteemed program, launched by the Bharti Airtel Foundation, aims to support meritorious students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds pursuing technology-based engineering courses in top 50 NIRF Engineering Institutions. The Bharti Airtel Scholarship Program received over 7,000 applications from across the country, out of which 276 students were selected. NITK Surathkal is delighted to have 12 of its students among the selected scholars. These students, will receive scholarship benefits, subject to meeting the renewal criteria, which include maintaining a minimum GPA of 6 out of 10, attending at least 75% of classes, demonstrating good conduct, and continuing in the specified course. ✨NITK Alumnus Himanshu Thapliyal Secures AIR 1 in UPSC Engineering Services Examination ✨ It is with immense pride that the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal, announces that Himanshu Thapliyal, an alumnus of the 2023 batch from the MTech program in Nanotechnology, has secured All India Rank (AIR) 1 in the UPSC Engineering Services Examination. Himanshu Thapliyal, born in Uttarakhand and raised in Lucknow, began his academic journey with a JEE rank of 5,83,000. His determination and hard work led him to achieve AIR 1 in Engineering Services. He pursued a BTech in Electronics and Communication at NPSEI, Pithoragarh and, with dedication, cracked GATE to join his dream MTech program at NIT Karnataka in Nanotechnology (2021–2023). Himanshu shared his aspirations to join the Indian Telecom Services, stating, "With this rank, I can finally achieve that goal. My focus now is on understanding the system and identifying the boundaries within which I can operate. Once I have a clear grasp of these, I aim to give back to society in any way I can." Reflecting on his journey, Himanshu said, "Initially, it was very difficult for me to decide what I truly wanted to do in life. The whole idea of getting into NITK was to gain exposure, meet diverse friends, and figure out my path. NITK not only provided me with an excellent platform to learn and grow, but it also shaped my mindset, helping me make the right decisions. I feel grateful that I chose the right college at the right time in my life." He also offered advice to UPSC aspirants: "Your time at NITK is incredibly valuable, so make the most of it and enjoy every moment. Balancing your studies with UPSC preparation is crucial. Winners of Smart India Hackathon (SIH) 2024💡 NITK Surathkal congratulates the winners of the 7th edition of the Smart India Hackathon 24– Software Edition Grand Finale. Out of 33 participating teams comprising 230 participants, a total of 10 teams emerged as winners, with 8 teams being declared joint winners for their outstanding solutions. The SIH 2024 at NITK Surathkal featured six key problem statements, with three problem statements from the Ministry of Coal and three from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. 💡Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Interacts with Participants of Smart India Hackathon 2024💡 The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, interacted with young innovators via video conferencing, highlighting the remarkable talent and ingenuity of India's youth. NITK Surathkal was one of the nodal centers that joined the PM's interaction. Addressing the gathering on the occasion, he said, “I have been eagerly waiting for the Grand Finale of Smart India Hackathon,” highlighting that he gets an opportunity to learn and understand something new when he is among young innovators. Pointing out his high expectations for the young innovators, the Prime Minister said they have the perspective to look at India of the 21st century differently. Shri Modi said, "Your solutions are also different, and when a new challenge arrives, you come up with new and unique solutions." The Prime Minister recalled being part of hackathons in the past and said that he has never been disappointed with the output. “You have only emboldened my belief,” he said, underlining that the solutions provided in the past are being put to use in various Ministries. The Prime Minister said that hackathons showed how the youth of the country are working with the government for the development of the country to deal with the challenges facing the nation. He added that it was giving them a sense of ownership towards solving the problems of the country and its development. Shri Modi expressed confidence that the country is on the right track to become a developed India. He lauded the eagerness and commitment with which the youth were finding innovative solutions to the problems of India. Stressing the need to think out of the box for every challenge in the country's aspirations in today’s time, Shri Modi emphasized the need to incorporate out-of-the-box thinking in our habits in every sector. Highlighting the speciality of this hackathon, the PM said its process is as important as the product. Adding that there was a time when only the government used to claim to solve the country's problems, Shri Modi said, however, through such hackathons, students, teachers, and mentors are also being connected to solutions. He stressed that this was India's new governance model and 'Sabka Prayas' is the life force of this model. Emphasizing that the generation of the next 25 years of the country is the Amrit generation of India, the Prime Minister said that the youth had the responsibility of building a developed India while the Government was committed to providing every necessary resource at the right time. ✨💡Some more glimpses of the Smart India Hackathon (SIH) 2024 reflect the scale and excitement surrounding this year's event. This year, more than 250 problem statements have been submitted by 54 Ministries, Departments, State Governments, PSUs, and Industries. An impressive 150% increase has been recorded in internal hackathons at the institute level, growing from over 900 in SIH 2023 to over 2247 in SIH 2024, making this the largest edition so far. More than 86,000 teams have participated in SIH 2024 at the institute level, and around 49,000 student teams (each consisting of 6 students and 2 mentors) have been recommended by these institutes for the national level round.
