Alex Yang is a highly skilled Software Engineer with over 7 years of experience in the industry. Currently working at Two Sigma as a Software Engineer (Storage), Alex has worked on an in-house distributed snapshot file system, persistent caching layer, and internals3 implementation used as the de-facto standard for storing and retrieving arbitrary including market information, simulation research, trading models, execution results, and more. He has also designed and implemented core functionality and enhancements to read+write paths, improvements to fault-tolerance, instrumentation/metrics, caching behavior, in addition to working on performance analysis, and automating deployment pipelines. In addition, Alex is in charge of the C++ and Python client implementations and has built tooling/infrastructure and led collaboration with researchers to migrate from legacy backend. Prior to his current role, Alex worked as a Software Engineer (Core Data/Database Engineering) at Facebook where he created and deployed MyRocks, an open-source (github.com/facebook/mysql-5.6) RocksDB storage engine for MySQL. Currently the primary storage engine for all user data. He also implemented support for hidden primary keys, designed and implemented support for expiring records (TTL) in MyRocks, and owned the online DDL implementation in the storage engine, especially ALTER TABLE/CREATE/DROP INDEX. Alex also improved deployment/testing pipelines for production binaries, became technical/culture fit interviewer, new hire mentor, and intern manager. Alex holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science from the University of California, San Diego, where he also worked as a Teaching Assistant - HCI Programming. He has a strong technical background in Software Engineering, infra, MySQL, Python, Research Scientist, Backend, and test.
