Design for Impact is an interdisciplinary, inter-institutional project-based, human-centered design initiative in partnership between the Virginia Tech College of Engineering, the Clemson University School of Architecture, the Wentworth Institute of Technology Industrial Design Program, and Boston College, Design Commons Collective and LSEHD. We have formally run the DFI initiative for five previous years and are celebrating our sixth year anniversary as a cross-institutional, academic-based, student and faculty collaboration. Faculty from these institutions co-created and have co-taught the DFI course via hybrid, in-person, and remote modality since 2019. Students from each university and each program are grouped into interdisciplinary, inter-institutional teams and tasked with a real-world design challenge that benefits the common good! In November of each year, students and their supervisors from Virginia Tech, Wentworth Institute of Technology, and Clemson University all travel across Boston or come up north along the eastern seaboard to co-present their Fall 2024 Design for Impact team projects along with their BC student colleagues and BC supervisors. Teams work from a human-centered, interdisciplinary lens ーincluding architecture, applied psychology, business, computer science, engineering, transformative education, history, industrial design, social impact business, and environmental studiesー to address complex, real-world problems. This BC Design for Impact Summit event each fall is co-sponsored by the Office of Provost and Vice Provost for Research & Academic Planning: Department of Design & Innovation, and the LSEHD Dean of Undergraduate Programs & Students.

Sharing some exciting 'Design for Impact' news! Our latest article on the 'Design for Impact' initiative is being published. See Gray, D., DeVoy, J., Wozniak, K., Liu, T., & Harding, D. (2024). Exploring the potential for faculty development via Design for Impact an interdisciplinary human-centered program in the next issue of the International Journal of Engineering Education, 40(6), 1. Our research explores the often-overlooked experiences of instructors in interdisciplinary and human-centered design programs. We dove into the world of intercollegiate collaboration, examining how instructors actually grow, transform, and develop through inter institutional, cross-disciplinary teaching experiences like DFI. Our findings? Instructors benefit from interconnected growth mechanisms, distributed growth mechanisms, and a culture of interdisciplinary appreciation and respect. We also identified a need for more dedicated time and structured processes to support comprehensive and sustainable growth networks among inter institutional, cross-disciplinary instructors. In a world confronted with pressing challenges —ranging from social inequity to sustainability—design possesses deep power to drive meaningful change. Recognizing this potential, the 'Design for Impact' initiative was co-created in 2019-20 by Tsai Liu (NC State), Daniel Harding (Clemson University), Julia DeVoy (Boston College), and David Gray (Virginia Tech) as an interdisciplinary, inter-institutional opportunity. Five years on, DFI continues to shine with founding and new colleague leaders, new institutional partnerships (Wentworth Institute of Technology) and our yearly cohorts of incredible students who champion design innovation and social justice while tackling real-world issues and fostering a more equitable and sustainable future! Boston College’s Dylan Kim , LSEHD ’26, a Design for ImpACCt ACC-ALN Initiative fall ‘23 cohort alum, pursuing a Transformative Educational Studies and Computer Science double major and a Design Thinking & Innovation minor; and his business partner, Timothy Liu, a CSOM ’26 Entrepreneurship and Finance double manor; participated in the Arizona State University-Global Silicon Valley (ASU-GSV) Annul Summit: AI in Revolution (AIR) Conference in San Diego. Top educators, education technology entrepreneurs, and investors gathered at ASU-GSV to discuss potential implications of rapidly growing Artificial Intelligence in the area of education. Dylan and Tim presented their new company, MLV a career preparation network that accelerates students and their entrepreneurial projects. Dylan and Tim also received inspiration from other experts in the industry. and had the opportunity to share their MLV new company and platform idea with thousands of other attendees.
