Amberley Romo is a seasoned Senior Frontend Engineer with over 10 years of experience in the tech industry. Currently working at Netlify, she is responsible for developing and implementing frontend features using various technologies such as Gatsby, React, Typescript, GraphQL / Apollo Client, Emotion, Theme-UI, and more. She is also known for her expertise in championing accessibility in collaboration with engineers from teams across the organization. Prior to her current role, Amberley worked as a Senior Frontend Engineer at Gatsby, where she was responsible for advocating for the open-source website as a product, collaborating with marketing and others on brand positioning and messaging, and maintaining the site itself. She significantly reworked the official Gatsby tutorial, notably adding a “Part Zero” focused on pre-requisites for development to lower the barrier to entry for new developers, and developers new to the JavaScript ecosystem. She also led the documentation effort for updates, migration guides, and new documentation related to the v2 major release. Amberley has given conference talks on various topics around Gatsby and the Jamstack ecosystem. Amberley holds a degree in Public Communication, Graphic Design & Chinese Language minors from American University and a Software Engineering degree from Hack Reactor. Her technical expertise spans across Frontend, Typescript, UI, Backend, Infra, and Javascript. She has defined accessibility shipping standards for the Gatsby Cloud frontend team, complementing the company-wide shipping standards. She has also collaborated to introduce automated accessibility testing in CI to their existing processes to avoid regressions of programmatically identifiable a11y errors.
