Amit Roy is a Principal Member Technical Staff at Oracle with a passion for computer systems. Currently, he is working on Automatic Storage Management (ASM), a storage virtualizer that manages storage for an Oracle installation in huge clusters potentially spread across geographically dispersed sites. He has a Master of Engineering (MEng) in Computer Science from Birla Institute of Technology and Science and a B.Tech in Computer Science & Engineering from the University of Kalyani. With over 10 years of relevant experience, Amit has a strong technical background and is well-versed in software engineering and web technologies. At Oracle, Amit has played a significant role in developing ASM, which is a volume manager and a file system that provides unique storage management and performance advantages to the Oracle database. ASM works seamlessly with Real Application Clusters (RAC) technology that allows the database to scale out across a cluster of servers and provides fault tolerance against the failure of any server or software component. ASM is also a key component of the Oracle stack running on Oracle's Engineered Systems - Exadata and Database Appliance - and provides a tremendous storage management advantage in these systems.
