Andrew Waters
Head Of Engineering at UBIO
About
Andrew Waters is a highly motivated full-stack platform engineer with over 15 years of experience in eCommerce, content management, and SRE. He is currently the Head of Engineering at UBIO, where he manages a team of 8 engineers and works closely with QSA's to achieve PCI Level 1 compliance. Andrew is responsible for recruitment efforts for the engineering team, running architecture and engineering calls, attending weekly management team meetings, and completing board reports. He also works closely with the CPO and Senior Product Manager to schedule work and ensure that two-way conversations are flowing between the two departments. Andrew has a wealth of experience working with an efficient tech stack, from the basic tooling (Docker & k8s) to implementing tooling and microservices. He has operational experience with MongoDB and MySQL and client knowledge of Postgres and Scylla/Cassandra. Andrew is familiar and comfortable with event-based systems as well as building REST APIs. His language of choice is Go, but he is also comfortable with PHP, Node.js, and Python. Andrew's experience working alongside stakeholders (both internal and external) affords him unique insight into the framing of technical questions and the communication between individuals and teams with different levels of technical competence. He has several production apps written in Node.js and has written Python ETL jobs on the back of Spark and Athena for big data processing. He has several serverless deployments in production, some on bare metal and many on k8s. The wealth of Andrew's experience is in eCommerce - he works as a Platform Engineer at Moltin, who provide a purely API-based eCommerce experience (aka "Headless Commerce"). At Moltin, Andrew has worked on all of their microservices that deliver an end-to-end solution for eCommerce-focused developers. He previously ran his own business as a client-focused "agency" with a custom CMS that handles ~150,000 page requests per day, delivered ~400,000 emails, and enabled ~£300,000 of commerce to clients each year. Andrew's technical skills include Senior Software Engineer, Microservices, SRE, Spark, Amazon Athena, Big Data, Python, Docker, PHP, MySQL, MongoDB, Cassandra, ETL, Postgres, product manager, DevOps, infra, Terraform, and GCP.
