Parelian was a start-up company that produced applications for the financial markets. The base product was a data flow/component based development environment within which other applications were built.

“Brewing Research International is the premier technology and information organisation providing technical, information and research services to the global brewing malting and drinks industries.” I was programme manager for the process engineering group, responsible for the technical quality, project management and delivery of contract services and research projects. I had a specific remit to develop mathematical models of the brewing and malting processes.

Process Modelling for Brewing and Fermentation, an Innovative Manufacturing Project: total value £1.7M: five industrial and four university partners. I was responsible for reporting, dissemination and technology transfer, co-ordination, the development of mathematical models, integrating and supporting work from the BRI fermentation group, and the monitoring and accounting of industrial contributions.

Model-based control of the Roasting of Barley and Malt, a LINK project: total value £250k: three industrial partners and two universities. (Responsibilities as above.)

Models were developed using MATLAB and the optimisation and fuzzy logic toolboxes: some model components were implemented in C, C++, Java, and VB. I used mixed optimisation strategies (genetic algorithms to find good starting points for standard constrained and unconstrained, multi-variable optimisation) and genetic algorithms for solving scheduling problems. I assisted in the statistical analysis of sensory and other experimental data (standard hypothesis tests, PLS, PCA, etc.). I applied Levenberg-Marquardt and Monte Carlo methods for model parameter and confidence interval estimation. Simple models of gas driven mixing during fermentation were developed using the finite volume approach, including physical property prediction and the incorporation of biological models of fermentation.
