Anna Selonick is a Senior Software Engineer (backend) currently working at Thumbtack. With over 7 years of experience as a product engineer and technical lead, Anna has worked with a range of technologies including Golang, Python, PHP, PostgreSQL, GraphQL, Kafka, and DynamoDB. Anna is passionate about human-centered design and social impact, and her goal is to build great products that serve the interests of their users. At Thumbtack, Anna works closely with product, design, and analytics teams to ideate and execute on new features. She has also worked on infrastructure-focused initiatives, such as migrating from monolith to microservice architectures. Anna has designed and implemented a new Go service with a PostgreSQL data store, which tracks the status of each professional against leveling criteria and notifies professionals when they reach a new level. She has also architected a new Go service with a DynamoDB datastore that aggregates marketplace insights offline to help professionals track how competitive their business is against other similar businesses on Thumbtack. Additionally, Anna spearheaded the implementation of a recommendations feature that helps professionals find more leads on the platform by surfacing unmet demand. Prior to her current role, Anna worked as a Software Engineer Technical Lead at Thumbtack, where she orchestrated engineering efforts for numerous discount and credit incentive experiments, significantly reducing the time to create new discount campaigns with the creation of a new incentive communications framework in PHP. She also executed on the in-product communications plan for a company-wide launch of a new feature with complex dependencies and strict timelines. Anna has onboarded and mentored new and junior engineers, identifying and scoping work for them, helping them through roadblocks, and familiarizing them with Thumbtack’s processes and architecture. Before joining Thumbtack, Anna worked as a Software Engineer, Tech Lead - Growth Team at Edmodo, where she designed and implemented experiments with goals of increasing Edmodo’s K-factor. She spearheaded the redesign and refactor of teacher profiles with a focus on rich content for SEO and user value. Anna also built out the front-end for Edmodo’s first public-facing learning resources and developed the interface for modular “People You May Know” app which is used throughout the site to connect teachers. Anna holds a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Computer Science from Northwestern University and has also studied at the National University of Singapore. Her technical skills include software engineering, PHP, Kafka, microservices, Python, Golang, and frontend development.
