Arvind Mani is an accomplished Engineering Director with over 22 years of experience in leading Security, Privacy, and Trust & Safety efforts at leading internet companies. He is currently the Senior Director of Engineering and Head of Trust & Safety at Databricks. Arvind is a results-driven leader who consistently delivers complex company-wide programs and cultivates balanced teams to leverage and complement people’s strengths. He is an inclusive leader who leans in and demonstrates the ability to build strong cross-functional partnerships. Arvind has an exceptional track record in bootstrapping and leading Privacy Infrastructure efforts. He was the Engineering Director of Facebook where he built Privacy from the ground up starting with a handful of engineers into a full-fledged product and infrastructure organization with a few hundred people. Currently, he leads a ~250 person organization based out of the UK and several US locations, developing systems to enforce proper data use by Facebook and prevent data misuse by third parties. Arvind played a key role in maturing Facebook’s Privacy Program and Risk Management practices. He led the hugely successful User Data Deletion effort, one of the largest cross-company efforts at Facebook in recent times. He significantly reduced scraping activity across Facebook and Instagram and successfully took legal action against third party actors to stop data misuse. He also bootstrapped data minimization efforts and drove adoption of privacy-preserving technologies across products. Arvind built a strong organization with a solid bench of senior leaders (eDirs, IC8s) and systematically improved organization health and operational excellence year over year. Arvind was one of the founding engineers of Member Trust & Safety at LinkedIn. He designed and built the initial versions of LinkedIn’s centralized login, account safety, and abuse prevention systems. He led successful responses to several critical security incidents. He also established the Data Security org and deployed inter-service authentication and access control. Arvind developed safe-by-default frameworks that eliminated several categories of injection attacks such as Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) and upgraded LinkedIn to default HTTPS. He created tools to monitor employee access to user data. Responsibilities grew to encompass all of Member Trust & Safety, which included Fraud and Abuse Prevention, Privacy, Account Safety & Recovery, as well as Data Security. Arvind significantly reduced account takeovers, fake accounts, job and payment fraud, impersonation, identified and encrypted cross-data center traffic flows all over the world, and reduced login friction and streamlined the account recovery process.
