The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) was founded in 1909 as a result of the joint efforts of Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, the Government of India, and the Maharaja of Mysore. In 1886, Jamsetji Tata conceived of a university of science that would work for the benefit of India, and in 1898 created an endowment for establishing such an institution. The Government of India then took up the effort, and, in consultation with scientists in England and in India, decided to locate the Institute in Bengaluru, where the Maharaja of Mysore, Shri Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV, donated 372 acres of land. The Institute was formally vested in 1909, the foundation stone was laid in 1911, and the first batch of students started their studies in the same year.Over the last century, IISc has become the premier institute for advanced scientific and technological research and education in India. Beginning with 2 departments and 21 students in 1911, today IISc has 39 departments, units, or centres, 3500 students, and about 500 academic and scientific staff, supported by 600 administrative personnel. About 2200 students are in various PhD programs, almost 900 are enrolled for various Masters degrees, whereas about 400 are registered in the newly established, research oriented, four-year Bachelor of Science (Research) programme.In recent years, the Institute has vigorously promoted interdisciplinary research. New centres such as the CiSTUP, the Robert Bosch Centre for Cyber Physical Systems and a new Centre for Brain Research (funded by a large private endowment) are expected to conduct translational research in their respective areas, in order to better connect with industry and society. With the recent construction of modern buildings, acquisition of new research facilities, and induction of a large number of new faculty members, the Institute can look forward to an era of high productivity, increasing impact, and rising prominence in the world.

Undergraduate dissertation - Processing and Characterization of 3D-Printed Inconel-718 Component through Laser Powder Bed Fusion Route for High-Temperature Space Application
3D printing is an advanced manufacturing technology, enabling the production of complex shapes by adding material layer-upon-layer. A fuel injection system component designed with Inconel-718 nickel-based superalloy for an advanced rocket propulsion system was realized through the Laser Powder Bed Fusion method. 3D printing allowed realizing the complex component having interconnected channels and having minute openings ranging from 3mm to 0.8mm, which are impossible to manufacture by conventional manufacturing methods such as computer numerical control machining. Detailed metallurgical characterization and mechanical property evaluation were performed to qualify the component for space application. This additive manufacturing process helped in avoiding multiple piece assemblies for the fuel injection system and developing an integrated component within a short turnaround time. The absence of any defects such as porosity, lack of fusion and microcracks were verified using microstructure evaluation with an optical microscope and scanning electron microscope. The mechanical properties were evaluated on 3D-printed test coupons in four different orientations using a universal testing machine. The fractographs in the solution treated and aged condition in four different orientations revealed a typical ductile fracture with the presence of dimples. Computed tomography of the component was carried out and it was concluded that defects > 139 μm were not present, which is the limitation for the thickness of the Inconel-718 component scanned. The formation of fine, complex channels and absence of defects > 139 μm as observed in CT, makes the component suitable for complex fuel injection operation for high-temperature space application.

Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) is the lead Centre of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) under the Department of Space (DOS), Government of India. VSSC pioneers in rocket research and launch vehicle projects of ISRO. The Centre also pursues research and development activities in associated areas like propellants, solid propulsion technology, aerodynamics, aero structural and aero thermal fields, avionics, polymers and composites, guidance, control & simulation, computer and information, mechanical engineering, aerospace mechanisms, vehicle integration and testing, space ordnance, chemicals and materials. Systems reliability and quality assurance of all aspects of engineering and operations are studied and evaluated to the levels of perfection required in each field. Programme planning and evaluation, technology transfer and industrial coordination, indigenisation, human resources development, safety and personnel and general administration groups support the Centre for all its activities. The Space Physics Laboratory (SPL) at VSSC carries out research and studies in atmospheric science and other related space science activities. Ammonium Perchlorate Experimental Plant (APEP) at Aluva in Kerala and the ISRO Inertial Systems Unit (IISU) at Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala also form part of VSSC.The ongoing programmes at VSSC include launch vehicle projects like Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV), Rohini Sounding Rockets and Space-capsule Recovery Experiments. The next generation launcher GSLV MkIII (also known as LVM3) has successfully undergone an experimental flight with passive cryo stage and proved the atmospheric regime. LVM3 flight with an active cryo stage, Reusable Launch Vehicle (RLV) and Air Breathing Propulsion for Advanced Reusable Launch Vehicle, Human Spaceflight Project etc are on the anvil. 

FOSSEE (Free/Libre and Open Source Software for Education)
The summer fellowship involved two tasks. In the first task, a textbook companion in R programming language was created (coded 43 examples from the book Matrices and Linear Transformations written by Charles G. Cullen). The second task involved a research project. An analysis of the solid waste management system of the Thiruvananthapuram municipal corporation was done in coordination with the city’s Mayor and Health Inspector. The project involved data collection from waste collection centers in 21 wards spread across 310 sq. km, thereby evaluating the city’s waste management strategy and providing guidelines for improving it. The work was carried out with the guidance of Prof. Kannan M. Moudgalya, IIT Bombay, and in collaboration with Free/Libre and Open-Source Software for Education.
