Benjamin Carlson
Site Reliability Engineer at Google
About
Benjamin Carlson is a senior at UC Berkeley, studying Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He is currently searching for a full-time software engineering opportunity, preferably in a New Grad position. Benjamin has seven years of computer science education and programming experience, which has given him a strong understanding of fundamental programming concepts. He codes mainly in Java and Python, but he also has experience coding in many other languages, including Go, C, HTML, SQL, and Latex. Through the many classes he has taken, Benjamin also possesses a variety of knowledge of fields, including Data Science, Computer Security, Artificial Intelligence, Operating Systems, and Databases. Currently, Benjamin works as a Software (Site Reliability) Engineering Intern at Google. His role incorporates site reliability into normal software engineer duties. Site reliability is an essential part of Google because it focuses on fixing services when they break and improving services' robustness so that it is easier to diagnose issues. Benjamin focuses on improving the robustness of Google's Firebase Cloud Messaging service, working mainly with its Webpush Federation subpart. The most significant features he added were vendor-subtractive latency and availability metrics. Additionally, after collecting some data, he created SLOs which are goals for the service to meet and which give users a good idea of what they can expect from the service. In the past, Benjamin has worked as a CS61B Academic Intern at UC Berkeley College of Engineering. He helped students during lab and office hours with planning, writing, and debugging their code for class homework, labs, and projects. He also explained to them the concepts being practiced in these assignments, while teaching them other important computer science topics so they have a strong foundation to support them in the future. Benjamin has also worked as an EE16B Lab Tutor at UC Berkeley College of Engineering, where he helped students in lab with debugging and building circuits. He explained to them the fundamental concepts behind the circuits they built, and he sought to improve their understanding of what they were creating and how it could be applied in real life. Benjamin has a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley College of Engineering. He has a tech stack that includes SRE, SQL, Data Scientist, Software Engineer, Python, and Java. Benjamin has 3.94 years of relevant experience.
