Bhavya Ghai
Applied Scientist @ Amazon | Algorithmic Bias Detective | PhD from Stony Brook University
About
Bhavya Ghai is a PhD candidate at Stony Brook University, working in the Computer Science Department under the guidance of Professor Klaus Mueller. Her research focuses on developing interactive systems to tackle high-impact social problems, with a particular interest in fairness in machine learning, human-centered AI, data visualization, and social computing. Bhavya's current research aims to enhance fairness, accountability, and explainability of ML systems by tackling algorithmic bias in different ML systems such as classification and Word Embeddings using human-centered AI. Bhavya has gained extensive research experience through internships at prestigious research institutions such as IBM Research, Bell Labs, Georgia Tech, and IIT Delhi. She is the recipient of several fellowships and awards, including the Bloomberg Immersion Fellowship, Data Science for Social Good Fellowship, IACS Junior Researcher Award, and Chairman Fellowship Award. Currently, Bhavya is working on her PhD thesis titled 'Tackling Algorithmic Bias using Human in the loop AI' under the supervision of Prof. Klaus Mueller. For her last project, she built a visual analytics framework based on causal inference to identify and mitigate algorithmic bias. Her tool provides a more fair, transparent, and accountable solution for algorithmic decision-making. Bhavya is also working on a visual interface to discover and mitigate social biases encoded in word embeddings using human in the loop debiasing. Bhavya has worked as a research intern at IBM's Human-Agent Collaboration group, where she devised a new paradigm called Explainable Active Learning (XAL) and showed that adding local explanations for model's prediction at every step of active learning improves annotator experience without compromising on performance. She has also worked as a research intern at Nokia, where she worked with the APSS team to build robust automatic speech recognition systems using publicly available data. Bhavya's educational background includes a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Computer Science from Stony Brook University, an Integrated Post Graduation (B.Tech+M.Tech) in Computer Science from IIITM, and Class 12 from Delhi Public School. Her technical skills include research scientist, AI, ML, data scientist, and integration, and she has relevant experience of 10.61 years.
