Carlos Morato is a highly skilled Lead Scientist with over 20 years of experience in AI research, engineering, management, strategy, and technology consulting for AI/ML. He has over 30 patents to his name and is working at the forefront of innovation. Currently, he serves as the Vice President of Applied Science & Artificial Intelligence at Optum Labs, a UnitedHealth Group company. In his current role, he is responsible for developing and executing the long-term strategic direction of Optum’s Machine Learning, artificial intelligence, and genomics capabilities for healthcare. He partners end-to-end with Product Managers, Applications architects, Data Scientists, Designers and Researchers to understand customer requirements, design prototypes, and develop innovative technologies. He also drives external partnerships and collaborations to achieve business goals. Carlos has a strong academic background and has served as a Visiting Professor at Harvard University and an Adjunct Professor at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He has a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Mechanical Engineering, AI-Robotics, a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Aerospace Engineering, and a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Computer Science - Machine Learning from Universidad Mayor de San Andrés. He also has a Bachelor of Technology - BTech in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Instituto Tecnologico Don Bosco. Carlos has a diverse tech stack that includes ML, AI, Research Scientist, NLU, Deep Learning, NLP, Data Scientist, product designer, Software Engineer, Search, Information Retrieval, Reinforcement Learning, Object detection, Web, Senior Software Engineer, Computer Vision, Object Detection, Image Processing, and Big Data. He is a technical leader managing and mentoring a team of data scientists and engineers. He is also leading the Ethical AI efforts in healthcare, improving the fairness and explainability of AI systems. He is an expert in developing state-of-the-art deep learning algorithms for NLP, NLU, and NLG, and generative models for Conversational, Summarization, Q&A, and CoT.
