Derek Smith is a seasoned Director of Engineering with over 26 years of experience in the tech industry. He is currently serving as the Director of Engineering at FM:Systems, where he provides technical oversight to the product line delivering robust Business Intelligence and actionable insights for all aspects of facilities management. Derek has a strong technical background, having previously worked as a Principal Software Engineer at FM:Systems. In this role, he provided technical leadership and mentoring to members of the Agile development team, established best practice guidelines for code quality, test coverage, and documentation, and daily coded in C# to build applications and API services with .NET using DDD/CQRS patterns. Derek also helped transition the legacy codebase and build process to Github and provided technical insight to the product management team. In 2020, Derek was promoted to Engineering Lead for FM:Systems' analytics and IoT platform team. In this role, he provided architectural guidance for large-scale data ingestion from IoT sensor hardware, drove the design of the reporting data warehouse across multiple product lines, and developed an enhanced reporting dashboard for environmental data captured from IoT sensor hardware. Prior to joining FM:Systems, Derek founded HomeSpot HQ, a unique online tool for homeowners that allows them to manage home improvement projects, schedule routine maintenance, and record facts and history about their homes. HomeSpot HQ was featured by BobVila.com, Real Simple, Fox News, Lifehacker, and the Kim Komando show, and was a finalist for the Idea Cafe Entrepreneurial Spirit grant.
