Francis Gulotta is a seasoned engineering leader with over 19 years of experience in building and scaling organizations and applications. He is currently the Director of Engineering at Vercel, where he is helping to build a company that enables developers to build faster web applications. Prior to his current role, Francis was the Engineering Development Manager at Shopify, where he played a key role in building the Scripts Platform. This WASM-powered execution API for low-latency APIs has enabled Shopify app developers to empower small businesses with even more features. Francis also managed the Scripts Patterns Team, which helped other departments build features powered by the platform while managing the feedback loop for the platform and infrastructure teams. He has a deep understanding of the benefits of investing in WASM on the server and has seen firsthand how it has led to a platform that can do a lot more than an HTTP API. Before joining Vercel and Shopify, Francis was the Senior Engineering Manager of the Growth Engineering Department at Justworks. There, he built engineering teams with a focus on improving the experience and operations of companies joining the Justworks platform. He helped lower the cost of service by improving workflows and reducing operational risk through a user-focused product development approach to internal tools. He also led the team responsible for the prospect experience, ensuring that the customer experience was straightforward from marketing to first payroll. Additionally, Francis was responsible for the HR tools team, which made it easy for businesses to manage their requirements regardless of their particular situation. Francis has a diverse technical background, having worked as a Senior Software Engineer, Web Developer, Infra Engineer, and Research Scientist. He has a proven track record of driving innovation and delivering results in complex environments. His ability to make structural changes in organizations and applications has allowed them to grow and scale.
