He has worked in the internet industry for over 14 years and has gained extensive expertise in machine learning, site reliability engineering, and software engineering. Gearoid is currently working as a Staff ML Engineer at X, the moonshot factory where he provides technical leadership for early-stage projects. Gearoid's professional journey began with a degree in Computer Systems from the University of Limerick in 2000. He then went on to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Genetic Algorithms from the same university, which he completed in 2008. During his PhD, Gearoid gained extensive knowledge and skills in the field of genetic algorithms, which he has applied in his work as a software engineer. After completing his PhD, Gearoid joined Hewlett Packard as a Software Engineer, where he worked on protocol analysis and design. He then moved on to Google, where he worked as a Senior Site Reliability Engineer for the Ads Serving stack. At Google, Gearoid was responsible for capacity planning, scaling and provisioning, service automation design and implementation, monitoring, operational tactical response, strategic service planning, and developer support.
