Gelu Oltean is a highly skilled Software Engineer with a passion for building new things. He is interested in functional programming, reactive programming, distributed systems, IoT, big data, and free and open source software. Gelu's love for building new things is reflected in his expressive, well-crafted code, modeled on the problem domain. He is proficient in Scala, but newer versions of Java are also cool for him. Currently, Gelu works as a Software Engineer at METRO.digital, where he develops microservices in Scala using Play and Akka http for a highly distributed and concurrent identity and access management solution. In his previous roles, Gelu worked as a Software Engineer at NTT DATA Romania, where he developed and maintained a service-oriented architecture using Java and Spring for a large automotive client. He also worked as a Software Developer at UBB IT Hub, where he developed microservices in Java and Spring Boot, using Hazelcast for caching, Spring JPA for persistence, and REST and gRPC for service communication, all deployed and provisioned using Docker. Gelu holds a Master of Science degree in Business Modelling and Distributed Computing and a Bachelor of Science degree in Geological/Geophysical Engineering, both from Universitatea „Babeș-Bolyai” din Cluj-Napoca. He is also proficient in various technologies and tools, including Scala, Java, Spring, Big Data, and Microservices. Gelu's relevant experience in the field of software engineering is 2.19 years. In his free time, Gelu enjoys building digital twins for tomato telemetry, trying to automate things around the house, hiking, and working with Linux.
