George Chen is an Assistant Professor of Information Systems at Carnegie Mellon University and Co-Founder of CoolCrop. With eight years of relevant experience, he has a strong background in developing machine learning approaches for forecasting produce prices and providing refrigeration and marketing analytics to farmers in rural India. George has a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he also earned a Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and an Engineer's Degree in Electrical Engineer. He completed his Bachelor's Degree in dual majors in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences, Engineering Mathematics and Statistics from the University of California, Berkeley. At Carnegie Mellon University, George teaches Unstructured Data Analytics for management master's students in public policy and information systems, focusing on recommendation systems, web development, and machine learning. He is currently working on several ongoing projects, including nonparametric survival analysis, interpretable produce price forecasting for farmers in rural India, and better understanding and modeling missingness patterns in recommendation systems. Prior to joining Carnegie Mellon University, George was a Postdoctoral Associate and MITx Digital Learning Fellow at MIT, where he developed a free, online, intro-college/advanced-high-school edX course on inference and machine learning with an emphasis on probabilistic graphical models. The course is accessible to anyone comfortable with Python programming and calculus and teaches basic probability as it relates to computation. George's tech stack includes recommendation systems, web development, Python, Javascript, Flask, and ML. He is passionate about using statistical inference and machine learning to solve real-world problems and help people make better decisions.
