Examining and designing computer programming tools from an intercultural perspective. 
• Wrote paper grounding the intercultural approach that earned a Best Paper Honorable Mention award at CHI 2020.
• Developing a quantum programming system that supports pen-based interactions: implemented a sketch recognition library in Python that combines classical and machine learning recognition using NetworkX and Keras, and extended quantum circuit notation to support abstraction features such as pattern matching, bundled wires, and recursion.

Instructor for INFO 3450 HCI Design x AI, with 30+ students. Teaching human-centered design and research with specific considerations for AI elements or systems. Proposed class based on recent research on HCD and AI. Classes are everyday for 6 weeks during Summer 2020.

Lead researcher on UNICEF intercultural computer science program for multi-ethnic youth, studying deployment of software in a developing setting. Advised by Kentaro Toyama at the University of Michigan and Steve Jackson and Tapan Parikh at Cornell University.

•  Designed study (stratified randomized control trial); developed and adapted evaluative measures to low-literacy context, including tests and surveys. 
•  Communicated and negotiated with partner NGO staff to verify research procedures.
•  Conducted fieldwork in Nairobi and Kakuma refugee camp. Wrote over 300 pages of notes and held 32 semi-structured interviews across two program cycles.
•  Applied grounded theory methods; synthesized and analyzed quantitative and qualitative data. Used a combination of Excel and Python scripts to streamline process.
• Contributed to CS curriculum and implementation. Wrote up year-end report for funder and partner organization. Presented select insights to Scratch team at MIT Media Lab.

Designed and analyzed a game theory model of how presence awareness mechanisms drive and alter user behavior. Advised by Professors Arpita Ghosh and David Easley.

Designed, developed and deployed the puzzle game "Reduct" for teaching core programming concepts, embodying a new "comprehension-first" approach to introductory programming. At various stages, led software team of undergraduates in implementation of new features, bug testing, and level design. The project was advised by Professors Andrew Myers, Erik Andersen, and Francois Guimbretiere. Reduct was published at CHI 2017 and was a finalist in the CHI 2017 Student Game Competition.

Specifically, I:
•  Developed the game from scratch in JavaScript ES6 (Babel) with Python, Node JS with a MySQL back-end for data logging. 
•  Ran mixed-methods lab studies and published prototype online to evaluate game and collect feedback. Iterated design over several pilots.
•  Developed a Jupyter extension to visualize, navigate, and aggregate player data as interactive network graphs.

•  Fall 2019: UX Research and Design (INFO 3450). Lectured on paper prototyping and contextual interviews, mentoring 10 project teams on early stage UX design process. 

•  Spring 2017: Ubiquitous Computing (INFO 4120), a project-based course covering ubiquitous computing field with a focus on health applications. Technical content included intro to Android App Inventor, sensors and wearables.

•  Spring 2016: Rapid Prototyping (INFO 4320). Sole TA for this project-based course of 42 students. I worked with Professor Guimbretiere to help teach electronics, Arduino prototyping, computer-aided design and 3D printing, ending in a show at the local ScienCenter. I held a lecture every week and taught when the professor was away.

•  Fall 2016 and '15: Intro to Web Programming (INFO 1300). Intro web programming course covering HTML, CSS, JS, jQuery, and PHP. Led discussions around improving the course content coverage and grading workflow.

Internal development for Augmented Reality mobile platform.
Restructured internal codebase for ease-of-use (created and documented an API).

Designed, developed and published locative mobile app (iOS) in Montreal Botanical Garden with Professor Jill Didur. Iterated design based on playtester feedback. Successfully pitched app to garden administration. Officially launched in May 2015 as physical panels in the Montreal Botanical Garden's Alpine Garden section.

Designed and programmed apps and games for various professors + labs around campus: TAG Lab, NT2, AmpLab. Conducted independent study at Topological Media Lab. 

•  Programmed a spoken word game in Obj-C++ with SpriteKit framework and FMOD (low level music) API. Finalist in CHI PLAY 2014 Student Game Design Competition.
•  Programmed a 3D physics engine from scratch as part of the Jarbles game project. Published on App Store and presented poster at GRAND NCE Conference.
•  Wrote algorithms for handwritten sketch analysis in Python and NetworkX.

Created and published iOS game "Kale In Dinoland." Featured by Apple in New and Noteworthy. Press coverage on TouchArcade, IGN, SlideToPlay, Indiegames.com, and PocketGamer, among others.
