Ian Garrett is a Growth Manager at Firstbase (YC W21) and a Startup Mentor at Defy Ventures and PIE. He is committed to accelerating global entrepreneurship through US incorporation partnerships. Ian is also the Associate Director for patent equity fund Ideaship, where he is responsible for business development, investment sourcing, day-to-day operations, systems development, and investee satisfaction. Ideaship is a venture services affiliate of GTT Group, providing equity-based patent development capital for early-stage ventures. The patent capital fund provides patent asset development services, including virtual patent department and patent business banking, along with subject matter expertise, external patent counsel funding, and fundraising support. Ian is a Mentor with Defy Ventures, a non-profit organization that works to shift mindsets to give people with criminal histories their best shot at a second chance through career readiness, personal development, and entrepreneurship training programs offered in prisons and in the community. He is also a Mentor at Portland Incubator Experiment, where he leverages his venture, software development, and intellectual property experience to help Oregon-based entrepreneurs reach their milestones. With 5.60 years of relevant experience, Ian's past companies include USNR as a Software Engineer Intern and Trend Capital Holdings, Inc. as a Software Engineer. He holds a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Computer Science - Database and Informatics from the University of Oregon, where he currently serves as a Computer Science Teaching Assistant.
