Jae-Woo Choi, Ph.D. is a highly experienced technologist with over 11 years of relevant experience in the fields of machine learning, computer vision, perception, and autonomy. He is currently working as the Head of Product Similarity & Matching at Wayfair, where he uses his skills in computer vision and NLP to help customers find what they want with imagery and text. Prior to this, he worked on external perception for autonomous flight at Aurora Flight Sciences (a Boeing company) and optical metrology for industrial automation at FARO Technologies. Jae-Woo holds a Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering from California Institute of Technology, where he also received his B.S. and M.S. degrees. He has published over 40 times in journals and conferences and has been cited over 250 times. He holds more than 20 trade secrets and patents (pending or granted). With personal experience on three different continents, Jae-Woo is fluent in multiple languages and comfortable in multicultural situations. He enjoys novel collaborations and ventures in both academia and industry, having written multiple business proposals with experience detailing business plans through SWOT, market analysis, 5-forces analysis, and product development. Jae-Woo has worked at all stages of product development, from his Ph.D. to startups with successful acquisition at Aurora Flight Sciences becoming Boeing, launching a successful product line while at FARO, and defining the technical strategy and vision while supervising double-digit machine learning scientists and engineers at Wayfair. He is a product manager, research scientist, and expert in computer vision, ML, and NLP.
