James Gerstenberger is a Software Engineer II at the Allen Institute for Brain Science with over 5 years of relevant experience. He is skilled in full-stack web development, working in an Agile environment, and using React, Redux, Node.js, AWS tools, and SQL as well as NoSQL data stores. James is also comfortable with many other libraries, frameworks, tools, testing protocols, cloud architecture, object-oriented programming, and test-driven development. James graduated from Code Fellows, a coding academy, where he learned skills such as utilizing version control, CI/CD, working in an Agile environment, and collaborative coding. He has also worked for Apptio, a company focused on technology business management, as an Associate Software Development Engineer within the Cloudability front-end team. In this role, he developed new features, was responsible for support and triage, and helped eliminate tech debt from a legacy codebase. In addition to his professional experience, James has developed a website that acts as a model dashboard for users of the Numer.ai data science tournament. As of writing, the site has received over 900 unique users from 37 countries including the United Kingdom, Germany, and China. James is adaptable and enjoys creating value for a company. In all his roles, he utilizes his own knowledge and his hunger to learn to become proficient at what he does. He has worked hard to do whatever needed to get done, including taking on new roles and learning new skills. His ability to take initiative helped the company grow, develop new products, and satisfy clients and licensees. James earned his Bachelor's of Science in Behavioral Neuroscience from Western Washington University. His original reason for studying neuroscience was his desire to help with the opioid epidemic. Helping people overcome addiction is one of his lifelong ambitions. In the future, he would love to combine his skills with software development with his past studies of neuroscience to help those struggling with mental health and addiction.
