Jay Howard is a seasoned software engineer with over 23 years of experience in building commercial applications using open source technologies. Currently, he works as a Staff Data Engineer at RetailMeNot, Inc., where he leads a small data team responsible for pipelines serving internal customers in finance, business analytics, data science, and various engineering teams. Jay is proficient in Python, Docker, Kubernetes, Astronomer, Airflow, Redshift, AWS, and Terraform. He has worked on various projects in the past, including back-end, mobile, and databases. In his previous role as a Senior Software Engineer at Malauzai Software Inc., Jay was responsible for back-end Rails development, writing client code to interface with a heterodox set of web services. He subsequently served as the company's sole Android engineer for two and a half years, responsible for a mobile app used regularly by approximately 300k users at around 200 financial institutions. He led a small team of Rails developers in prototyping the company's next-gen customer management console and performed zero-down-time deployments of the company's server architecture.
