Jeff Stewart is a Senior Staff Software Engineer at Google with over 25 years of professional software engineering experience. He has a strong focus on designing, implementing, and supporting large scale hosted installations with specialties in software performance, large system efficiency, distributed system latency diagnosis and improvement, networking and communication, RPC in various flavors, software project management, and internet protocols. Jeff has worked at various tech companies such as Google, Good Technology, Critical Path, RemarQ Communities, and Netscape Communications. At Google, Jeff has been responsible for leading the migration of Google Search to secure-by-default, reducing the frontend serving compute costs of Google Search by 20%, and seamlessly migrating auto-complete to the Search frontend, increasing QPS by 10x. He has also built and scaled Gmail from internal pilot through early launch, scaling for the first 100M users, and was the sole author of Gmail POP3 (patented the key algorithm), and SMTP MSA, prototyped IMAP system. Jeff has been awarded the most prestigious award for project achievement at Google for his work on Gmail. Jeff has a Master of Science in Information Networking and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University.
