Jim Apple is an experienced engineering leader with a passion for distributed systems and big data. Currently, he is serving as an Engineering Manager at Facebook, where he is responsible for the development of Presto. With over 16 years of relevant experience, Jim has worked with some of the most renowned companies in the tech industry, including Netflix and The Apache Software Foundation. During his tenure at The Apache Software Foundation, Jim served as the Project Management Committee Chair for Impala. Under his leadership, the project saw significant growth, with twelve community members being democratically elected to commit rights to the project. Additionally, three people were added to the governing body, the PMC, and the project released two minor versions and one major version, Impala 3.0. At Netflix, Jim led a team responsible for storage and metadata services around the company's data warehouse, which was a few hundred petabytes of Parquet files on S3. He also worked on building a one-stop-shop for all business-critical metadata at Netflix, both within and outside of their S3 data warehouse. Jim holds a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics from the University of Virginia and a Master's Degree in Computer Science from the University of Oregon. He is fluent in databases, systems software, infrastructure, big data, and distributed systems. Jim is a big data enthusiast who is passionate about enabling customers to understand their data and make meaningful decisions based on it. Although Jim is currently not looking for a new role, he welcomes messages and emails from anyone who wishes to connect with him. He uses he/him pronouns.
