Joseph Ternasky is a highly experienced Director of Engineering, Privacy and Data Use at Facebook, where he leads the ideation, technical development, and launch of privacy products and features. He collaborates with legal, product, policy, and infrastructure teams on Data Privacy to define the strategy, and develops narratives based on user perception, regulatory pressure, and changes in Facebook products. Joseph is skilled in defining and analyzing metrics that drive the success of products and establishing shared vision across the company by building consensus on priorities leading to product execution. He understands Facebook’s strategic and competitive position, in order to deliver products that are recognized best in the industry. Before joining Facebook, Joseph was the VP of Engineering at Wealthfront Inc., where he led and grew a diverse team of ~90 talented software and systems engineers. He provided technical leadership for both product and business strategy, defined and instituted a distributed team structure, and continued to refine the software engineering process to institute best practices in architectural design, software development, testing, deployment, monitoring, and alerting. Joseph was responsible for managing project milestones, progress, and issues, and reported status and progress to the executive team. Joseph is also a Co-founder of Candor, Inc, a startup company funded by Harrison Metal and Homebrew Management. Here, he built a web application, Candor Gauge, to implement the feedback improvement process described in Radical Candor: Being a Kickass Boss Without Losing Your Humanity, by Kim Scott. He collected requirements, designed initial feature set, and wrote the product requirements document. Joseph built a prototype web application in Java, React, and JavaScript with one other engineer. He managed contractors who designed the website and application user interface, built the website on Wordpress and Prometheus, ran user testing sessions, and used results to quickly update the user interface and feature set. Joseph hired two engineers to build the production web application in Scala, React, and JavaScript, hosted on Amazon Web Services (EC2 and DynamoDB), SendGrid, and New Relic. Joseph holds a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science from California State Polytechnic University. He has over 30 years of relevant experience and is skilled in Senior Software Engineering, Web, Infra, Test, Product Management, Software Engineering, Javascript, New Relic, Redis, Scala, and Java.
