Karan Bhanot is a highly motivated PhD candidate in Computer Science, with a focus on Machine Learning, Fairness, and Synthetic Data. He has published several papers in the Healthcare, Fairness, Machine Learning, and Deep Learning communities. Currently pursuing his PhD at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York, Karan is passionate about developing real-world applications and solutions that benefit both researchers and industry professionals. Karan's research interests include synthetic data generation, privacy preservation, fairness evaluation, and mitigation. He is proficient in Python, including libraries such as numpy and pandas, as well as deep learning libraries such as Tensorflow. Karan is also familiar with mathematical concepts such as Statistics, Linear Algebra, and Probability, which he uses to develop metrics for evaluation and understanding of ML/DL background. Karan actively engages with other research groups in his Institute for collaborative work, participates in constructive brainstorming sessions, and enjoys developing solutions that bring multiple ideas together. He has experience working with Git, although often made private due to limited public access of healthcare information. Karan is interested in research and data job roles that provide him a platform to brainstorm ideas, collaborate with others, and develop solutions that promote company growth and his personal learning. He is currently working as a Research Extern at IBM, where he coordinates and collaborates with the "Algorithmic Stability, Uncertainty and Fairness in Healthcare" team under the guidance of Yoonyoung Park. His responsibilities include exploring current literature in synthetic healthcare fairness, generating private data cohorts to evaluate fairness across multiple protected attributes based on MIMIC using Python, and evaluating synthetic healthcare data for fairness by training ML models using Python. Before joining IBM, Karan worked as a Graduate Research Assistant at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he was actively involved in research and development of fair healthcare data. He has also worked as a Software Engineer at Cvent, where he developed solutions for inter-device operability and introduced new front-end features that utilize REST APIs to send and receive information. Karan holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Computer Science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, a Master of Science degree in Computer Science from the same institute, and a Bachelor of Technology degree in Computer Science and Engineering from Punjab Engineering College.
