Kevin Wheeler is a highly experienced software engineering manager currently working at Facebook. With over 10 years of relevant experience, he is responsible for supporting a couple of engineering teams that focus on developing internal tools and interfaces within the Infrastructure Org. Kevin and his team build tooling to improve the efficiency of the online production data stack, covering over 20% of the infra fleet. They also build interfaces that empower engineers to interface with and manage those services. Before joining Facebook, Kevin worked at Instagram as Manager, Data Engineering. He ran Data Engineering for Instagram's Community product pillar focused on driving Instagram's Growth and promoting the Well-being of people on Instagram. He built a team of 13+ Data Engineers and Data Engineering Managers to support multiple product orgs and ~dozen product teams, helping scale and grow the Data Engineering org at Instagram by 4x over a two-year timeframe. Kevin spearheaded several org-wide data infra/tooling initiatives to scale and automate data processes and analytics insights, building a data landscape that facilitated Instagram's growth from ~600 million to over 1.1 billion monthly active users. Kevin's expertise in data engineering and infra is evident in his previous role as Senior Data Engineer at Facebook, where he was the 1st Data Engineer in London. He supported multiple product and analytics teams across FB's Ads Org, developed hiring & recruiting channels, and built a team of Data Engineers to support the company locally. Kevin architected and built Big Data technical solutions focusing on logging, ETL/framework development, visualization, and alerting. He also developed analytics-driven data artifacts and insights that informed product development and strategy for multiple product teams. Kevin has a strong educational background, with a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and a Master of Science (M.S.) in Materials Science from Stanford University, and a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Materials Science from MIT.
