Laura Cheng is a highly experienced Staff Software Engineer with over 22 years of relevant experience in the technology industry. She is currently working at LinkedIn in the same capacity and is responsible for developing and designing back-end software servers. Her past experience includes working at Motorola as a Principal Staff Software Engineer in the Cloud platform team and at Yahoo as Tech Yahoo. At Motorola, Laura was a key contributor to the design and development of back-end software servers for mobile social networks, mobile device upgrade services, and mobile message routings. She has expertise in web application servers, large scale and high-performance software design. Laura re-designed the message routing system to allow push messages to be sent to the device and maintained and migrated old message routing platforms. She developed the framework of a back-end server as an aggregator of multiple social networks to allow delivery of social messages to the phone. Laura also provided solutions to various Jetty and application problems, migrated all key systems to use Jetty instead of Tomcat, upgraded Jetty to newer versions, and provided configuration for production and QA environment. At Yahoo, Laura worked on Sponsored Search (Ad Words), My Yahoo, RSS, and generic backend data storage, among others. She was a key contributor to the design, development, and delivery of various back-end Yahoo services, including My Yahoo, the #1 mostly-visited portal site of the year. Laura conducted numerous software system tunings and analysis to improve system performance, stability, and scalability. She was also part of the great effort of Panama project to improve Yahoo’s biggest revenue stream in sponsored search. Laura holds a Master of Science in Computer Science from Columbia University and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from The University of British Columbia.
