Lawrence Lin Murata is a co-founder and CEO at Slope, a Buy Now, Pay Later for B2B company that recently graduated from Y Combinator's Summer 2021 batch. He is a Forbes 30u30 and MIT Under 35 awardee who is passionate about creating products that can help improve people's lives. Lawrence has over six years of relevant experience in the tech industry. Before starting Slope, Lawrence worked as the Head of AI Platforms & Data Science at Nauto, a 200-people self-driving vehicle company backed by Greylock, Softbank, GM, BMW, Toyota, and others. He led 20 people across Data Science, Risk Assessment, Data Analytics, Collision Detection, and AI Tools. He spearheaded and led several key projects, many of them in production, such as risk assessment for auto insurance, end-to-end autonomous driving, data exploration tool, revamping their data labeling tool, a sound-based detection model, a predictive collision model, and detection of atypical devices. Lawrence also contributed to multiple areas of the company, was the lead backend engineer for Nauto Explore (data exploration tool), implemented DL models for autonomous driving, sound-based collision detection, and multi-sensor collision prediction, designed wireframes from scratch that were implemented, and initiated relationships with potential data partners. During his tenure, he won all hackathons. Lawrence was also the Founder/CEO of Newton Technologies, which was acquired. He led/managed the development/release of several internal tools and products, including technologies in V2V communication, collision risk modeling with real-time context and driver behavior, safe routing, B2B/B2C driver apps, crime/collision safety tech, logistics tech, OBD II. He developed partnerships and relationships with major fleets, ride-sharing, and insurance companies. Lawrence also partnered with HELLA (one of the largest German automotive component manufacturers) to build V2V solutions and develop the driver HMI for autonomous vehicles. Lawrence holds a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Computer Science (AI) from Stanford University, where he graduated in 2017. He also attended Peking University in 2016 and Y Combinator in S21. Lawrence's tech stack includes AI, Backend, Data Scientist, and Deep Learning.
