Lorin Hochstein is a Senior Software Engineer at Netflix with over 16 years of relevant experience in software engineering and operations. He is passionate about complex systems and their behavior, both in success and failure, and is an advocate of resilience engineering and cognitive systems engineering. Lorin's current work involves building tools to improve deployment workflows on the Managed Delivery team at Netflix. Previously, Lorin worked on the Critical Operations & Reliability Engineering (CORE) team at Netflix, where he focused on improving the company's reliability. Before that, he was a member of the Resilience Engineering (Chaos) team at Netflix, where he built tools to inject failures into production to ensure that the Netflix service remained available in the face of hardware failures, network glitches, software bugs, and other problems that inevitably plague distributed systems. Lorin's past experience includes working as a Senior Software Engineer at SendGrid, where he worked on threads.io and developed new features for loader.io. He also worked as the Lead Architect for Cloud Services at Nimbis Services, Inc., where he developed Django-based web applications for technical computing users and deployed them in cloud environments such as Amazon EC2 and OpenStack. Lorin holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Maryland, an MS in Electrical Engineering from Boston University, and a BEng in Computer Engineering from McGill University. He also has a DEC in Pure & Applied Science from Marianopolis College. Lorin's technical skills include AWS, Ansible, Ruby, Typescript, Redis, Postgres, Selenium, Jenkins, CI/CD, and web development. He is also a dabbler in formal methods such as TLA+ and Alloy and is intrigued by functional programming languages such as Haskell and Clojure.
