Lu Chen is a highly experienced and battle-tested engineering leader with a track record of building scalable content understanding, moderation, and recommender systems for billions of users. With over 8 years of relevant experience, Lu has advanced machine learning techniques and has worked with some of the biggest names in the tech industry. Currently, Lu is the Senior Engineering Manager at Roblox China, where he leads the trust and safety engineering team. He is responsible for bringing Metaverse to China through the Roblox platform and is leading a team of talented engineers to achieve this goal. Lu is passionate about his work and is always looking for talented individuals who are interested in learning more about his team and company. Prior to his work at Roblox, Lu was the Engineering Manager at Instagram, where he supported the Instagram Shop Tab Relevance team. He managed a team of 20+ engineers and cross-functional support (PM, DS, UXR) to build the recommender system that powers the IG shop Tab, the first B2C and social shopping experience on Instagram as a global tab. Before his time at Instagram, Lu was a Software Engineer at Google, where he worked on Image Understanding under the Machine Perception org. He was the owner of Google's largest image training dataset (JFT-300M), including label taxonomy curation and automating data mining pipeline from Google Image Search and Youtube. His work was featured in Google AI Blog and empowered several academic publications. Lu also built a never-ending learning ML framework to automate active learning loop to improve visual classification tasks. Lu holds a Master of Science (MS) in Computer Science from the University of North Carolina and an MPhil in Computer Science and Engineering from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He also completed an Exchange Study in Electronic Engineering from The George Washington University and holds a BEng in Electronic Engineering from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
