Luca Ballan is a highly accomplished computer vision and machine learning researcher with over 12 years of experience in the field. Currently, he works as a Staff Research Engineer for Machine Learning at Google, where he focuses on developing cutting-edge technologies for ARCore. Luca's research interests are broad and encompass deep learning, 3D reconstruction, motion capture, localization, change detection, autonomous driving, and mixed reality technologies. He is proficient in a range of programming languages, including C++ and Python, as well as TensorFlow. Prior to joining Google, Luca worked at Microsoft as a Principal Scientist, where he conducted research on deep learning and computer vision for Hololens and Azure. He also worked as a Senior Researcher at Apple's Special Projects Group, where he focused on developing AI and computer vision technologies for autonomous systems. Luca received his PhD in Computer Engineering from the University of Padua in 2009, where he worked on estimating the shape and motion of interacting people from videos. He also holds a Master's degree in Computer Engineering from the same university. During his time at ETH Zurich, Luca worked as a senior researcher under Prof. Marc Pollefeys, where he developed various technologies for human motion capture, hand motion capture, video-based rendering, and image-based localization.
