Mahesh Patil is an accomplished automation and digital professional with over 12 years of experience in the field. He is currently working with Hitachi as part of the Infrastructure Systems Division. Mahesh is an alumnus of IIT Kharagpur, where he completed his Master of Technology in Mechanical Engineering. He also holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Savitribai Phule Pune University. Prior to his current role, Mahesh worked with Tata Steel as a Senior Technologist in the Automation Division of the Hot Strip Mill. His primary responsibility was to draw insights from data by statistical analysis, machine learning techniques, and data mining to identify hot rolling process anomalies, defects, and their resolution. Mahesh drove improvements in the hot rolling process through data analysis and optimization techniques to improve process parameters and stabilize operations to achieve uniform product quality. He created reports based on his findings to be presented to plant chiefs and heads at monthly review meetings and made recommendations for improvement. Mahesh's notable achievement was applying the random forest model for predicting bad coiling defects in the down coiler section of the hot strip mill. This involved unstructured table relationships, a large volume of data (~50GB+), 200+ process parameters in 18 different tables, collected at different frequencies. He achieved a defect prediction model accuracy of 73% built using the random forest algorithm in R. This resulted in tangible benefits of ~Rs. 1 Cr for Tata Steel. Mahesh also conducted knowledge sharing sessions on the fundamentals of machine learning algorithms such as neural networks, tree-based algorithms, logistic regression, lasso, ridge regression, model evaluation techniques, etc. He trained and mentored junior technologists in various aspects of data analysis and machine learning. Mahesh has also worked with Ah! Ventures as a Business Analyst, where he analyzed business and revenue models for new ventures and conducted due diligence of new start-up ventures. He also handled legal contracts with start-ups. Mahesh's tech stack includes infra, random forest, machine learning, and neural networks.
