Mark Whelan is a highly experienced Head of Technology with over 21 years of relevant experience in the industry. He is currently the Head of Technology - Australia at The Athletic, where he leads the development and delivery of the platform as part of the broader Product, Data, and Technology group. Prior to this, Mark was the Head of Technology at The Players' Tribune, following the acquisition of Unscriptd by TPT. At Unscriptd, Mark served as the Chief Technology Officer, where he was accountable for strategy and implementation covering all aspects of Unscriptd's technology. He was also a key contributor to product development and business strategy. Mark's key achievements at Unscriptd include the re-architecture of Unscriptd's original product, which resulted in greater product stability, increased speed to market of new features, and a decrease in operational costs. He also led the creation of a new SaaS platform based on the existing architecture, enabling the business to expand its opportunities globally and led to new business such as Telstra/AFL, Netball Australia, Cricket Australia, Diamond League, and the EFL. It was this technology that led to their subsequent acquisition by The Players' Tribune. Mark has a Bachelor's Degree in Business, with Management and Contemporary Marketing Majors from Griffith University. He also completed an Executive Leadership Program in Business from the Australian Graduate School of Management. His tech stack includes product management, ETL, and integration. Mark is a skilled technology leader who has contributed to the development of company culture and capital raising activities. He has a proven track record of delivering successful technology solutions and driving business growth through technology.
