Matthew Miklasevich is a Senior Software Engineer - Ecosystem Safety at Instagram with over 6 years of relevant experience. He is passionate about solving real problems that impact people across the world, especially when diving into ambiguous, difficult issues to efficiently develop meaningful solutions. At Instagram, he has tackled a variety of Integrity problems including compromise, spam, abuse, and risk discovery, and has experience driving efforts that span multiple disciplines including security, infrastructure, machine learning, product design, and legal policy. Matthew is mainly a backend engineer that prefers Python, but loves learning new things and has gained experience with machine learning, data science, full-stack development, and several other languages (Haskell, PHP/Hack, JS/React) on the job. At Instagram, Matthew is the team lead for the newly created "Integrity Red Team" whose mission is to efficiently discover and mitigate risks. He has led the strategy to establish a working model across product, security/privacy, and policy XFN partners across Instagram and Facebook. He has onboarded and mentored several senior engineers, scaling a small eng team to have company-wide impact. He has also ramped up to a hybrid data science - engineering role to comprehensively discover, understand, and mitigate risks. He coordinates org-wide incident response reviews to identify root causes and assign follow-up tasks to prevent future regressions and improve the quality of their products and infrastructure. Matthew has previously worked at Instagram as a Senior Software Engineer - Account Safety where he was a tech lead in the compromised account problem space. He drove direction and execution of the roadmap across a team of 8-10 engineers and several XFN partners. He refined ML models to detect and prevent bad actors from abusing the platform. He built backend and improved user-facing products for hacked account prevention and recovery. He architected efficient frameworks for content, age, and geo-based restrictions on critical accounts. He also designed and scaled infrastructure to notify and restrict users for GDPR compliance. Matthew holds a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a High School degree from Central Catholic High School.
