Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, the second IIT to be set up in 1958, is recognised worldwide as a leader in the field of engineering education and research. It is reputed for the quality of its faculty and the outstanding calibre of students graduating from its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The institute has a total of 15 academic departments, 30 centres, one school and five Interdisciplinary programmes. Over the last five decades, more than 52,600 engineers and scientists have graduated from the institute. It is served by more than 650 faculty members considered not only amongst the best within the country, but also highly recognised in the world for achievements in the field of education and research. Today the Institute is recognized as one of the top centres of academic excellence in the country. Over the years, there has been dynamic and rapid progress at IIT Bombay in both academic and research activities, with a parallel improvement in facilities and infrastructure to match with the best institutions in the world.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is one of the largest departments in the Institute, with 62 full-time faculty membes and over 50 full-time administrative and technical support staff. The department offers B.Tech., B.Tech. + M.Tech. (Dual Degree), M.Tech., and Ph.D. degree programs, with over 650 undergraduate, 200 M.Tech. and 250 Ph.D. students on roll. The department has over 30 instructional and research laboratories, equipped with some of the state-of-the-art scientific instruments and systems.

IIT Bombay's Prof Souvik Mahapatra honoured with named model for chip reliability Prof. Souvik Mahapatra's analysis and modeling methodology, which has been helping semiconductor manufacturers to make reliable electronic chips, is now available as "Mahapatra Reliability Model" in Sentaurus Device TCAD software from Synopsys. Semiconductor chips power electronic products, and reliability is essential for their sustained use. A chip contains several billions transistors, the nano-sized switches that process data. Prof. Mahapatra of the Department of Electrical Engineering has collaborated closely with global semiconductor industries for over two decades on transistor reliability research. A team of Ph.D students from IIT Bombay comprising of Anamika Laishram (Physics), Sudha Gautam (MEMS) and Dippin T. (Chemistry) accompanied by Prof. Rajiv Dusane, MEMS are visiting the Advanced Materials Science Department, Tsukuba University, Japan under the SAKURA Science Exchange Programme between IIT Bombay, IIT Guwahati and Tsukuba University, Japan. The team will spend 20 days (1-20 December, 2024) in Japan to study in labs where advanced research related to their Ph.D theme is being carried out. During the academic interactions, students are learning advanced techniques of material process and characterization. They also visited the Photon Factory and the Synchrotron Facility at KEK, Tsukuba and learnt about utility of these beam lines for material characterization. The visiting faculty members also addressed the graduate students working in Materials Science program at the Tsukuba University.
