Nevin Valsaraj is a graduate student in robotics at the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University, with a focus on software systems engineering for autonomous systems and planning techniques for robotics. With a background in software engineering, Nevin previously worked at Microsoft for 5 years on various projects including Bing Search, and as part of the Web Experiences Team, where he improved engineering infrastructure and developer productivity. At his current internship at Aurora, Nevin is working on the self-driving platform's autonomy runtime (OS & middleware) and safety-critical software. He has improved the inter-process communication layer by implementing memory optimizations for the internal socket communication framework, preventing out-of-memory crashes during runtime. Nevin's graduate program coursework covers control systems, mechanics & locomotion, systems engineering, path planning, trajectory generation, sensing, perception, and autonomy. He has also worked on embedded software on IoT devices with the Wireless Connectivity Solutions group at Texas Instruments, where he developed an optimized GPS device driver from scratch for their proprietary microcontroller platform, reducing memory footprint by ~63%. Nevin holds a Bachelor of Technology (Honours) in Computer Science and Engineering from IIT, and is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Robotic Systems Development from Carnegie Mellon University, with expected graduation in December 2023. His technical skills include software engineering, web development, infrastructure, search, and NodeJS. With 5.85 years of relevant experience, Nevin is a driven and skilled professional with a passion for robotics and autonomous systems.
