Panagiotis Papadimitriou is a highly experienced and hands-on data science and engineering lead with a passion for building and running data science and engineering teams. He specializes in shipping machine learning models to production systems and moving business metrics. With almost 12 years of relevant experience, he has a proven track record of success in business thought leadership, search and recommendation systems, data mining, machine learning algorithms, statistics, freelancer marketplaces, crowdsourcing, advertising, natural language processing (NLP), information retrieval, ranking, and analytics. Currently, Panagiotis is the Director of Engineering at Meta, where he leads Engineering for the Facebook Integrity team. His team has around 200 engineers split between offices in Menlo Park, Seattle, and New York, and is responsible for ensuring the integrity of Facebook app products such as News Feed, Pages, Stories, Groups, Search, Video, and Facebook Monetization products. Panagiotis and his team are working on various areas, including brand safety, content understanding, actor understanding and enforcement, forensics, ML/Ranking Infra, and ranking for connected and unconnected surfaces. Prior to joining Meta, Panagiotis was the Senior Director of Data Science & Engineering at Upwork (formerly oDesk), where he built and led a 20-person data science team responsible for modeling and engineering various areas, including applicant ranking (BestMatch), job search and recommendations, freelancer quality, client lifetime prediction, fraud detection, and A/B testing. His team developed and open-sourced internal tools for shipping machine learning models on production, contributed to machine learning open-source tools such as scikit-learn, and led the thinking in workplace matching with publications in top academic venues. Panagiotis holds a Ph.D. and an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University and a DiplEng in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens. He is skilled in various technologies, including senior software engineering, ML, data science, infra, NLP, search, information retrieval, recommendation systems, scikit, test, and research scientist.
