SWISSCO funds 6th Grain pilot project to develop Black Pod Rot fungal predictive system for Cameroon’s cocoa growers 6th Grain and Syngenta will work together to deliver a digital agronomic model which will target Phytophthora megakarya or Black pod rot fungal disease in Cameroon. Black pod rot is the most serious disease affecting cocoa production in Cameroon. Beans from pods attacked by the disease are not suitable for processing and must be discarded. Losses can reach 100% of annual production if no control measures are taken. The methods available for controlling cocoa black pod rot are fungicide application, use of resistant cultivars and removal of infected pods. An increase in the effectiveness of control can be expected when these methods are combined. Their relative importance in spreading the disease depends on the management practices being applied, the type of cultivar and current agroecological conditions. The pilot will focus on these conditions and provide an early warning system that will enable early action to prevent yield loss. 6th Grain will begin in Cameroon with value chain actors and the government on about 10000 cocoa farms. The solution will have the model running automatically across agriculture areas of Cameroon and producing a daily disease susceptibility index indicating the vulnerability of the area to the black pod disease in the next few days. This will help identify areas under risk, plan fungicide distribution and respective logistics, alert farmers to apply preventive farm management practices (sanitation of tools, removal of infected pods) before intense rainfall.

6th Grain has been approved to develop a unique remote sensing-based remote monitoring system for development projects for the Abu Dhabi Fund! Using remotely sensed data, we will show that we can help them determine installation of solar energy, hospitals and other investments across Africa. We hope it is the start of a new collaboration that uses geospatial data for improved monitoring and evaluation of projects.

Official Statement from Mr. Rakesh Verma , Co-founder & CMD, MapmyIndia , on the Outcome of the Recent Board Meeting “As it requires dedicated focus to build consumer business, Rohan Verma , CEO and Executive Director of MapmyIndia proposed to the board to fund a new venture outside the company. The proposed consumer business will complement and showcase MapmyIndia’s core market strength of B2B and B2B2C, while focusing exclusively on the B2C segment. The MapmyIndia board approved a funding of 35 crores by way of CCD in addition to acquring 10 percent equity stake in the start-up. Rohan Verma will now be able to fully focus on the consumer business. Rohan continues to stay on the Board of MapmyIndia as a Non-Executive Director. MapmyIndia will continue to focus on its core B2B and B2B2C business, which has a large and growing addressable market, and where MapmyIndia is the market leader with a strong track record of growth and profitability.
