Rui Barbosa Martins is a highly experienced Software Engineer currently working at Apple, where he is focused on Machine Learning and Machine Learning Infrastructure. With over 16 years of relevant experience, Rui has a proven track record of delivering successful projects in the tech industry. Prior to joining Apple, Rui worked at Facebook, where he was the Tech lead for the build infrastructure and services team responsible for all software built by Facebook. He designed and implemented the high-performance and scalable C++ distributed build artifact cache servers that handled all Facebook builds doing 500k+ request/sec, 200+ GB/sec, and a P95 request latency below <10 milliseconds. Rui also designed and implemented the company-wide distributed build system, improving build times up to 4x. He gave keynote speeches at several internal and external 100+ people talks about distributed systems, build, and C++. Before Facebook, Rui worked at Microsoft, where he was part of the Skype Big Data Team. He designed and implemented an event log and telemetry big data pipeline from scratch with features like real-time timeseries-based analytics, machine learning over historic/current data, and MapReduce style data post-processing using Hadoop and Hive. This pipeline was extremely successful and is used by multiple Microsoft divisions. Rui also created a real-time distributed TimeSeries column store in Azure and implemented master election and a traffic throttling/shedding C# library for Azure that is used across thousands of servers. Rui holds a Licenciatura in Computer Science/Engineering from Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto, where he completed a 5-year program. He has a diverse tech stack that includes Software Engineering, ML, infra, Big Data, MapReduce, Hadoop, Java, Senior Software Engineering, Apache Hive, Azure, and Python.
