Samuel Messing is a highly experienced Senior Staff Software Engineer currently working at Slack. With a strong background in software engineering, machine learning, and integration, Samuel has worked with some of the biggest names in the tech industry, including Google, where he held various roles, including Senior Software Engineer and Staff Software Engineer. At Google, Samuel co-founded Tog, an Area 120 startup, where he served as the Tech Lead and helped build a travel recommendation service that integrated with Google Maps. He also led the Rapid Prototyping Team for Android & Research, where he built proof-of-concept and initial prototypes for marquee Android features, including Smart Text Selection and Digital Wellbeing. Samuel's work in this area involved on-device machine learning for a privacy-first approach. He also co-led an experimental embedded hardware project involving on-device machine learning for real-time human/AI collaboration, which involved over 20 engineers. Samuel's experience at Google also includes leading Data Analysis & ML Research for G Suite Editors. He pitched, founded, and led a team of five engineers to perform data analysis, ML prototyping, and ML integration for the G Suite Editors, including Docs, Sheets, Slides, Keep, Jamboard, and Sites. He designed and implemented petabyte-scale pipelines, requiring integration and coordination across the individual G Suite editor teams. Before joining Google, Samuel earned his MS in Computer Science from Columbia University and a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from The Johns Hopkins University. He has a strong technical background and is proficient in software engineering, ML, integration, backend, Android, research, AI, and web development. With over 10 years of relevant experience, Samuel is a highly skilled and accomplished software engineer with a proven track record of success in building complex systems and leading teams.
