Sean Calarco is an experienced software engineering leader with over 8 years of relevant experience. He is currently the Director of Engineering at Handshake, where he leads the Platform Services engineering team. Sean is responsible for building capabilities used across all Handshake applications, such as authn|z, notifications, session management, administration, and the front-end design system. He is also responsible for the Mobile teams at Handshake. Sean has managed small to large engineering organizations using a variety of agile methodologies and organizational designs. He has a demonstrated ability to grow a highly successful team from twenty to forty in one year. Sean has experience managing individual contributors (junior and senior), frontline engineering managers, senior engineering managers, and other directors. He has also acted as a product manager for engineering teams. Sean is a passionate technologist with experience building mission-critical systems that scaled for one of the largest ecommerce companies in the world. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Computer Science from Boston University. Sean's tech stack includes Senior Software Engineer, Mobile, Frontend, product manager, SDET, DevOps, SRE, test, Data Scientist, Research Scientist, Software Engineer, and infra. In the past, Sean has worked as the Director of Engineering at The Predictive Index, where he managed software development for a group that builds technology cutting across all of The Predictive Index suite of products. He also led the PI Personalization and Innovation team, a cross-functional group focused on transforming behavioral research and data science into innovative product features. Sean built up and led the Developer Experience Engineering team, responsible for DevOps, Release Engineering, Site Reliability, Infrastructure, Test Automation and Tooling, and Architecture. He grew the team from a small set of devops engineers hiring in a manager, staff architect, and Senior SDET. With this team, he drove improvements in efficiency, quality, and resiliency across PI's process and technology.
