Shashank Sharma is a highly skilled Machine Learning and Robotics Engineer with a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering. He has a passion for working on the latest trends in automation and using his interdisciplinary knowledge to solve challenging problems in the transportation, manufacturing, and healthcare industries. Currently, Shashank is working at Dematic, Kion Mobile Automation as a Machine Learning Engineer, where he is responsible for research and development of robot mapping and localization algorithms for automated guided vehicles in warehouse environments. He has worked with sensors like 2D/3D LiDAR, wheel odometry, IMU, and cameras, and has used programming languages such as C++, Python, and Robot Operating System (ROS) for software development. Shashank has also supervised many undergraduates on robotics projects such as walking bots, climbing bots, battle bots, biomimetic bots, self-driving cars, and drones. He has a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, focusing on robotics, where he designed algorithms for simulation and synthesis of single-degree-of-freedom closed-loop mechanisms (parallel kinematic robots). During his Ph.D., he also developed SnappyXO, a laser-cut robotics kit to create mechanisms, structures, and robots, which ran a successful crowdfunding campaign. As part of Udacity’s Self Driving Car Nanodegree program, Shashank has worked with critical autonomous driving technologies such as computer vision, deep learning, sensor fusion, localization, motion planning, behavior, control, and system integration. He is also a certified SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework) Practitioner and trained to use Scrum, Kanban, and XP in a SAFe environment. Shashank has worked as a Research Assistant at Stony Brook University, where he developed a computational framework for data-driven mechanism design innovation supported by a $450K NSF grant. He also designed algorithms for simulation and synthesis of Planar, Spherical, and Spatial single-degree-of-freedom robotic systems resulting in multiple publications in journals by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. In addition, Shashank has experience as a Strategic Partnership for Industrial Resurgence (SPIR) Intern at Leviathan Energy, where he designed and manufactured a hydro-kinetic turbine with an improved airfoil design that produces 50% more power. He created engineering models using Solidworks and Autodesk Inventor and fabricated parts by FDM based 3D printing.
