Stephen Schlie is a highly experienced Platform Engineer at BlueOwl, LLC with over 16 years of relevant experience in the field. He is responsible for developing and maintaining the company's platform built on top of AWS, Terraform, and Kubernetes. Stephen spends most of his days writing a mixture of Terraform, Helm, and Go/Python/Bash, mixing in a bit of yaml for CICD here and there. With his expertise in AWS, Terraform, SRE, Python, Kubernetes, test, infra, Docker, Web, Golang, and Software Engineering, Stephen has developed extendable and flexible Terraform modules for SREs to implement, maintained custom helm charts for engineering teams to use and extend for deployments, and developed and maintained Gitlab CI templates for teams to use in building CI pipelines. Stephen has led the charge of upgrading BlueOwl's k8s clusters from ancient versions and streamlined the process to make future upgrades as painless as possible. He has also developed a CICD pipeline to integrate, test, and deploy the company's application stack. Prior to joining BlueOwl, Stephen worked with the Public Library of Science as an SRE, where he was part of a small team doing SRE things. He maintained infra both in house ESXi and in AWS, used IaC tools (Terraform, AWS CDK, Pulumi) and CasC (Salt) for deploying services, and wrote custom Salt modules to cover areas they felt lacking in Salt. Stephen also developed several applications to ease developer experience for local development and developed CLI and Web applications using Golang and Python. At Tigera, Stephen was a Software Engineer and part of the small, dynamic engineering team which developed and supported Project Calico and CNX products. He worked primarily on Open source versions of Calico and supporting code bases (libcalico-go, calicoctl, Canal, etc.) and improved documentation both internal and customer-facing. He also integrated Calico and Canal into several 3rd party Kubernetes deployment tools such as kops. Overall, Stephen is a highly skilled Platform Engineer with a proven track record in developing and maintaining complex platforms built on top of AWS, Terraform, and Kubernetes. His experience and expertise in SRE, Python, Kubernetes, Docker, and Golang make him a valuable asset to any team.
