Sunil Kumar is a highly skilled Senior Engineering Manager with a passion for solving problems through technology. Currently working at Unacademy, he has over 10 years of relevant experience in building applications and teams from the ground up. Prior to his current role, Sunil served as an Engineering Manager at HackerEarth, where he built, mentored, and nurtured a team of 15 engineers and leaders working across multiple products. He improved application uptime from 99% to 99.99% and reduced cloud cost by 20%, while guiding teams to handle scale and hosting the biggest online assessment event in India with 200K candidates in 2 days. He also championed ISO 27013 certification for the application and its compliance across teams, built relationships with 10+ third-party partners, and mentored multiple frontend/backend teams to move from Python monolith to micro-service architecture. Sunil has also worked at Clip, a short video platform catering to Indian vernacular users, where he managed and mentored the backend team. He re-architected the backend system from monolith to multiple Java microservices (Spring Boot) from scratch, enabling faster debugging by enabling distributed tracing and live debugging among microservices, reducing production issue debugging time from 30 minutes to 2 minutes. He migrated existing storage of standalone database to a scalable NoSQL solution and was responsible for the devops and security of the complete infrastructure hosted on AWS. He also architected and implemented reactive websocket solutions using Netty for a real-time chat system, benchmarked it for 1 million concurrent users. Sunil holds a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) degree in Information Technology from the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), where he graduated in 2013.
